When we think of the holiday season, we envision wholesome gatherings, gift exchanges, and delicious meals shared with loved ones. But for over 7,600 young Victorians aged 12-24, this season will be one spent without warmth, stability, or security – the basics many of us may take for granted.
Make a difference this holiday season, to help end youth homelessness
Victoria has seen a 19.7% increase in youth homelessness since 2016. Even more heartbreaking is that 1 in 7 people experiencing homelessness are children under the age of 12. These young people are among the most vulnerable in our society, often coming into our care having faced significant challenges such as abuse, neglect, family violence, mental health struggles, addiction, and discrimination. These numbers highlight the urgency of our mission – to end youth homelessness, together.
At Lighthouse, our belief is that every young person deserves the opportunity to heal, thrive and feel safe. Our Kinship & Family Support program is at the heart of our mission to facilitate healing and provide stability to vulnerable young people. Through this program, we provide long-term support to vulnerable children and young people aged 0-21, including access to therapy, practical help, and a nurturing, stable home environment.
At the centre of Lighthouse’s program is our vibrant Hub Home, a place of support and community connection. Here, we organise regular social activities for families and local carers to connect, reflect and learn together. By fostering this community, each young person has an extended support network and a safe space to call their ‘home away from home’.
As we practice gratitude this festive season, we reflect on the incredible work of our Therapeutic Case Managers – who meet regularly with carers, children and young people to support family visits, engagement in health and wellbeing appointments, assisting with education and supporting the coordination of day-to-day care and support.
